More daylight, more space and more ways to spend the day
A summer holiday in Taivalkoski can be as active or unhurried as your family wants it to be. The landscape offers forest trails, rivers, lakes and national parks, while Tiera provides a familiar place to return to every evening.

Four national parks, one hotel base
Syöte, Riisitunturi, Oulanka and Hossa National Parks can all be explored on separate day trips from Taivalkoski. Each offers a different landscape, from forested hills and wetlands to clear lakes, ridges and river valleys.
Stay in the same room throughout your holiday and choose each day’s destination according to the weather, your interests and your family’s energy.

Nature begins close to your room
You do not need to spend every day travelling. The Taivalvaara outdoor area, local forest trails and the landscapes around Tiera make short walks, bike rides and relaxed outdoor time possible close to the hotel.
This gives families the freedom to combine bigger excursions with easier days.

Equipment and local help when you need them
Electric bikes, canoes, SUP boards, fishing equipment and tennis equipment are available from Tiera, subject to current availability.
The hotel can also help guests understand local routes, equipment requirements, transfers and guided activity options.

A comfortable return after the outdoors
After hiking, cycling or paddling, return to your room, a buffet meal, Finnish sauna and indoor swimming pool.
Keeping accommodation, meals and recovery in one place makes active summer days easier for both adults and children.
Coolcation in Northern Finland
A cooler way to enjoy more of summer
In Taivalkoski, summer is made for being outdoors. The days are long and bright, while temperatures are often milder than in the traditional hot-weather destinations of southern Europe.
Instead of arranging your day around the strongest midday heat, you can hike, cycle, paddle and fish from morning into the light northern evening. Forests provide natural shade, clear waterways invite you to cool down and the changing weather keeps the landscape fresh.
A coolcation does not mean missing summer. Warm and sunny days are part of the season, but so are fresh mornings, comfortable evenings and cooler nights. Pack a few light layers and enjoy a holiday that leaves your family with the energy to experience the destination.
Comfortable days outdoors
Milder conditions make hiking, cycling and exploring easier to enjoy throughout the day.
Forests and water close by
Spend time beneath the trees, paddle across a quiet lake or stop beside a river when you want a cooler moment.
Long, light evenings
The white nights give you more freedom to choose when to head outside. There is no need to fit every experience into the middle of the day.
Space to slow down
Taivalkoski offers a quieter setting for families who want nature, activities and time together away from crowded summer resorts.

Forest trails for an hour or a whole day
Taivalvaara offers a convenient starting point for exploring the landscapes close to Tiera. The local selection includes short walks, family-friendly trails and longer routes through forests and gently rising terrain.
The five-kilometre Taivalvaara Nature Trail is one option for guests who want to spend a few hours outdoors without making a full-day excursion. Families can also look for shorter local routes such as the Fairy Tale Trail.
Further afield, Soiperoinen, Pyhitys and Kylmäluoma offer varied landscapes for independent day trips.
Routes, surfaces and seasonal conditions vary. Check current trail information before departure and choose a route suited to your group.
A different landscape every day
Use Tiera as your national park basecamp
Taivalkoski lies within reach of four national parks. Instead of changing accommodation, your family can return to Tiera after every excursion and choose a new landscape the following morning.

Syöte National Park
Forested hills, old-growth woodland and varied trails make Syöte suitable for hiking and nature-focused day trips. Part of the park extends into Taivalkoski.

Riisitunturi National Park
Riisitunturi is known for its broad views, wooded hills and distinctive hanging bogs. Routes range from shorter walks to longer hiking days.

Oulanka National Park
River valleys, rapids, suspension bridges and well-known hiking routes make Oulanka one of the region’s classic outdoor destinations.

Hossa National Park
Clear lakes, pine forests, ridges and prehistoric rock paintings give Hossa a character of its own. The park is also well suited to combining hiking with time beside the water.
Note:
The national parks are separate day-trip destinations rather than one connected resort area. A car or pre-arranged transfer is needed for most excursions.
Further along the trail
Explore Taivalkoski on two wheels
Taivalkoski offers marked cycling routes, quiet roads and forest tracks for different levels of experience. An electric bike makes it possible to cover more ground while still remaining close to the landscape.
Choose a short ride around Taivalvaara or plan a longer route towards Kylmäluoma, Jokijärvi or other parts of the surrounding area. Route length, surface and difficulty should always be checked before departure.
Tiera rents electric bikes and provides a helmet with the rental. Bike types, sizes and battery range are subject to availability.
Best for:
Active couples, families with confident cyclists and independent explorers

See the landscape from the water
Calm lakes or moving rivers
The waterways around Taivalkoski offer very different paddling experiences. Beginners can enjoy calm lakes and sheltered water, while more experienced paddlers can explore selected sections of the Iijoki and Kostonjoki rivers.
Tiera rents canoes and SUP boards. Paddles and life jackets are included, and equipment transport may be available for an additional charge.
Choose the route according to your experience, weather conditions and the age of the participants. Moving water and rapids require appropriate skills or a qualified guide.
Best for:
Couples, families with swimming skills and travellers who enjoy quiet nature
Time beside the water
Rivers, lakes and the quiet between casts
Taivalkoski offers fishing in lakes, rivers and flowing-water environments. The Iijoki and Kostonjoki rivers are known for species such as grayling and brown trout, while the surrounding lakes may offer pike, perch, whitefish and zander.
You can spend a simple afternoon fishing from the shore or arrange a more focused outing with a local guide. Tiera rents selected fishing equipment, but fishing permits are purchased separately.
The required permit depends on the water, fishing method and age of the angler. Check the current rules before fishing.
Best for:
Beginners, experienced anglers, parents and children seeking a quiet shared activity
For a more active day
Feel the current of the Iijoki
The Taivalkoski Canoeing Centre and local activity providers offer ways to experience moving water with professional guidance. Depending on the current programme, activities may include rafting, whitewater canoeing and riverboarding.
Guides select suitable sections and provide safety instructions and activity-specific equipment. Minimum ages, swimming requirements and physical demands vary between products.
These activities should be booked separately and are subject to water conditions, group size and guide availability.
Best for:
Adventure seekers, active families with older children and groups
Not every day needs an expedition – easy family activities
Smaller experiences for a relaxed summer day
A memorable holiday can also be built from simple activities close to the hotel.
A short nature walk
Choose an easy local trail and leave time for stopping, looking and listening.
Tennis or outdoor games
Rent tennis rackets and balls for an informal game with family or friends. Local frisbee golf and other recreation options may also be available.
A picnic outdoors
Ask about a packed lunch and find a suitable rest area beside a trail or lake. Follow local fire restrictions and use designated campfire sites.
Berry picking
In late summer, wild berries may be found in the surrounding forests. Pick only species you can identify and respect private homes, protected areas and local guidance.
Local culture
Combine outdoor time with a visit to Taivalkoski village, Jalava Village Shop or one of the area’s cultural and historical sites. Opening hours should be checked before departure.
Evenings that seem to continue
Make room for the white nights
Around midsummer, darkness never fully settles over Taivalkoski. The sun remains close to the horizon, and evenings fade slowly into pale northern nights.
The long light gives the holiday a different rhythm. You can take an evening walk, sit beside the water, photograph the landscape or enjoy the terrace without feeling that the day has ended too soon.
This is not the continuous Midnight Sun found north of the Arctic Circle. It is the softer light of the northern white nights — a natural part of summer in Koillismaa.
Return, recover and begin again
Sauna, swimming and a generous meal
After a day on the trail or water, return to Tiera for a Finnish sauna, indoor swimming pool and buffet meal.
Sauna offers warmth and quiet after physical activity, while the pool gives families an easy way to spend time together. Superior Rooms and Suites also have private saunas.
Bioharmonia wellbeing services can add a calmer element to the holiday. Treatments, sauna sessions and pool opening hours should be checked in advance.

Families and children
Many activities are suitable for families, but route difficulty, equipment sizes, swimming requirements and minimum ages vary. Check the individual activity before booking.

Wear a life jacket whenever using a canoe or SUP board. Check the weather and avoid unfamiliar moving water without suitable skills or a guide.
